NHK BSプレミアムにて毎週土曜22：00より最新のシーズン4が放送中の『SHERLOCK シャーロック』。英国発の大人気ミステリーは、原作を生かしつつも原題風にアレンジしたセリフの数々も魅力の一つ。数回にわたってそんなセリフのいくつかを日本語＆英語でご紹介していこう。今回のテーマは、劇中の重要な要素の一つである、主人公シャーロック・ホームズとその相棒ジョン・ワトソンのコミカルなやり取りの数々（その1）。

ベイカー街に同居することになったシャーロックとジョン。警察の顧問探偵であるシャーロックから誘われてジョンは捜査にも参加することに。
ジョン：何をさせる気だ？
John: What am I doing here?
シャーロック：手伝ってくれ。
Sherlock: Helping me make a point.
ジョン：家賃折半なら手伝う。
John: I"m supposed to be helping you pay the rent.
シャーロック：こっちの方が楽しい。
Sherlock: Yeah well this is more fun.
ジョン：楽しい？ 人が死んだのに？
John: Fun? There"s a woman lying dead.
シャーロック：完璧な分析だ。でももっと詳しく頼む。
Sherlock: Perfectly sound analysis but I was hoping you"d go deeper.

同居を開始してすぐ怪しい男（実はシャーロックの兄マイクロフト）から接触されたジョン。シャーロックを監視するよう頼まれて断るが、それをシャーロックに報告すると思わぬ反応が...。
ジョン：君の友達に会った。
John: I just met a friend of yours.
シャーロック：友達？
Sherlock: A friend?
ジョン：敵かな。
John: An enemy.
シャーロック：ああ、どいつだ？
Sherlock: Oh! Which one?
ジョン：「究極の敵」ってその男は言ってたけど。
John: Your archenemy, according to him. Do people have archenemies?
シャーロック：僕のスパイを頼まれたか。
Sherlock: Did he offer you money to spy on me?
ジョン：ああ。
John: Yes.
シャーロック：受けたのか？
Sherlock: Did you take it?
ジョン：いや。
John: No.
シャーロック：次は引き受けろ。謝礼を山分けだ。
Sherlock: Pity, we could have split the fee. Think it through next time!

シャーロックを助けるため、連続殺人犯であるタクシー運転手を射殺したジョン。撃ったのがジョンだと気づいたシャーロックと落ち合い、二人でジョークを飛ばす。
シャーロック：大丈夫か？
Sherlock: Are you all right?
ジョン：ああ、もちろん。
John: Yes of course I"m all right.
シャーロック：人を殺したのに。
Sherlock: You have just killed a man.
ジョン：ああ、そうだな。確かに。でも善人じゃなかったし。
John: Yes, I -- {pause} It"s true, innit. But he wasn"t a very nice man.
シャーロック：ああ、善人じゃなかった。
Sherlock: No. No, no he wasn"t really, was he?
ジョン：ひどい運転手だった。
John: And frankly a bloody awful cabbie.
シャーロック：確かにそれは言えてる。道の選び方がなってない。
Sherlock: That"s true. He was a bad cabbie. You should have seen the route he took us to get here.
ジョン：よせよ！ 笑ったらまずい。犯罪現場だ。
John: Stop. We can"t giggle. It"s a crime scene. Stop it.
シャーロック：撃ち殺したのは君だろ。
Sherlock: You"re the one who shot him, not me.

二人そろってバッキンガム宮殿に突然連れてこられた時もふざけ合ってたしなめられることに。
ジョン：なんでこんなところに？ シャーロック。真面目な話、なぜ？
John: What are we doing here? Sherlock, no, seriously. What?
シャーロック：わからない。
Sherlock: I don"t know.
ジョン：陛下に謁見か？
John: Here to see the Queen?
シャーロック：（現れたマイクロフトを見て）ああ、間違いない。（二人で爆笑）
Sherlock: Oh! Apparently, yes.
マイクロフト：一度でいいから大人らしく振舞ってみたらどうだ。
Mycroft: Just once can you two behave like grown-ups?
ジョン：事件を解決してブログに書くとかパンツを履き忘れるとかで精一杯。
John: We solve crimes, I blog about it and he forgets his pants. I wouldn"t hold out too much hope.

すっかり意気投合した二人だが、時にはシャーロックの変人ぶりに苦労するジョン。勝手に私物を使われたり、捜査に代理で出向く羽目になったり、知能が高い彼のひけらかしにイラつくことも。
ジョン：それ僕のパソコン？
John: Is that my computer?
シャーロック：もちろん。
Sherlock: Of course.
ジョン：は？
John: What?
シャーロック：僕のは寝室だ。
Sherlock: Mine was in the bedroom.
ジョン：取ってくればいいだろ！...パスワード教えてないのに。
John: What? And you couldn"t be bothered to get up? ...It"s password-protected.
シャーロック：そんなもの突き止めるのに1分もかからなかった。ガード甘いぞ。
Sherlock: In a manner of speaking. Took me less than a minute to guess yours, not exactly Fort Knox.

シャーロック：レベル6の事件だ。7未満じゃ僕は現場に出向かない。決めたろ？ おい戻れ、草を見せろ。
Sherlock: Look, this is a six. There"s no point in my leaving the flat for anything less than a seven. We agreed. Alright go back, show me the grass.
ジョン：いつ僕が同意した？
John: When did we agree that?
シャーロック：昨日。ストップ！ 近づけ。
Sherlock: We agreed it yesterday. Stop! Closer.
ジョン：昨日は家じゃなくダブリンにいた。
John: I wasn"t even at home yesterday, I was in Dublin.
シャーロック：聞いてない君が悪い。
Sherlock: It"s hardly my fault you weren"t listening.

ジョン：お～、頼む。今回は止めてほしいな。
John: Can we not do this this time?
シャーロック：何を？
Sherlock: Do what?
ジョン：何をって、謎めいた顔をしたりコートの襟を立ててクールに見せたりするのをだ。
John: You, being all mysterious with your cheekbones and turning your coat collar up so you look cool.
シャーロック：してないだろ。
Sherlock: I don"t do that.
ジョン：してる。
John: Yeah, you do.
（シーズン2第2回「バスカヴィルの犬（ハウンド）」）
ジョン：それ、やめてくれ。
John: Don"t do that.
シャーロック：何を？
Sherlock: Do what?
ジョン：その顔。
John: The Look.
シャーロック：顔？
Sherlock: The Look?
ジョン：またしてる。
John: You"re doing The Look again.
シャーロック：自分じゃ見えない。（鏡を見て）こういう顔だ。
Sherlock: I can"t see it, can I? It"s my face?
ジョン：ああ、でもその顔は「これくらい君でもわかるだろ」って顔。
John: Yes, and it"s doing a thing. You"re doing a "We both know what"s really going on here" face.
シャーロック：そうだろ？
Sherlock: Well we do.
ジョン：いや、僕はわからない。だからその顔は不愉快。
John: No. I don"t. Which is why I find The Face so annoying.

普段やりこめられている分、たまにシャーロックからこういう発言が飛び出すと、ジョンは嬉しくて仕方がない模様。
ジョン：どこへ行く？
John: Where are we headed?
シャーロック：アドバイスを聞きに行く。
Sherlock: I need to ask some advice.
ジョン：は？ 何？
John: What? Sorry?
シャーロック：聞こえただろ。二度は言わない。
Sherlock: You heard me perfectly, I"m not saying it again.
ジョン：君がアドバイスを？
John: You need advice.
シャーロック：ペンキの専門家の意見を聞くんだ。
Sherlock: On painting, yes. I need to talk to an expert.

感情は捜査の邪魔だとしてシャーロックが恋愛する気はない一方、ジョンは職場の女性と出かけることになるが...。
シャーロック：気分転換に出かけよう。
Sherlock: I need to get some air. We"re going out tonight.
ジョン：いや、僕はデートだ。
John: Actually I"ve got a date.
シャーロック：何？
Sherlock: What?
ジョン：好き合っている二人が一緒に出かけることさ。
John: It"s where two people who like each other go out and have fun.
シャーロック：僕とでも同じだろ。
Sherlock: That"s what I was suggesting.
ジョン：いや、違う。同じじゃ困る。
John: No it wasn"t. At least I hope not.

ひょんなことからジョンがシャーロックと間違われて密売組織にさらわれた時も、二人のやり取りはあくまでコミカル。
ジョン：僕はシャーロック・ホームズじゃない！
John: I"m not Sherlock Holmes!
シャン将軍：信じられないわね。
General Shan: I don"t believe you.
シャーロック：信じた方がいい。シャーロックはそんな男じゃないぞ。ジョン、僕はどんな男だ？ 才能豊か？ 力強い？ 得体が知れない？
Sherlock: You should, you know. Sherlock Holmes is nothing at all like him. How would you describe me, John? Resourceful, dynamic? Enigmatic?
ジョン：遅い。
John: Late.
